Landfill Lining and Capping
Ensuring landfill sites are lined correctly to minimise the impact on the surrounding environment
In accordance with guidelines set out by the Environment Agency, UK Landfill sites are required to be lined in a manner that minimises possible impacts on the surrounding environment. The use of HDPE liners for landfill sites has become standard practice since its introduction in the 1980s, replacing the use of standard PVC liner. HDPE Geosynthetic liner is preferable to PVC liner, due to its broad chemical and weather resistant properties,
HDPE liners provide a more stable and long-lasting containment barrier and are used on the majority of landfill sites across the UK. In addition, landfills are also required to be capped - to help contain gases generated by landfill sites and to ensure that rainwater does not become leachate.
